Bowlers fine-tune skills at Kempton Park Bowling Club
A team from the West Rand walked away as winners in the men’s section.
Kempton Park Bowls Club welcomed 96 bowlers to its crisp lawns on January 19 and 20 as they hosted a section of the Gauteng Challenge.
Veteran players older than 60 from six different bowling districts came together to fine-tune their skills in preparation of the inter-district tournament on March 11.
It was the Limpopo women who had the upper hand during the tournament, as they walked away as winners of the women’s section. The West Rand Association’s Sables saw their men take home the trophy in their section.
Sables also won the Bill Dillon Trophy for the best open team, while the Professor J Church trophy for the best B team went to Ekurhuleni Bowls. The Johannesburg Bowls Association was awarded the Cyril Katz Trophy for the best veteran team.
According to the president of Kempton Park Bowling Club, Richard Connellan, bowling is for everyone.
“[People love it] because of the camaraderie and the fact that there is such a variety of people playing,” he told Express. “It’s for people who are highly competitive and for people who aren’t serious about the sport at all.”
Connellan added that bowls was a relatively cheap sport and that players could practice by themselves.
According to Petro Gibbons, Ekurhuleni and Gauteng Bowls secretary, people of all ages can participate in the sport. “We have events for people as young as 19. Bowling is not just for older players.”
