Makang FC claims Midrand Rovers’ scalp

Makang FC weekend league win

Makang FC are top of the log table after beating Midrand Rover FC 2-0 at Rabie Rigde Stadium on March 10. It was the second round league match under the auspices of the Midrand Local Football Association, with their eyes focused on being promoted to feature in the SABS League.

The game kicked off at 1pm with both teams aiming to bag maximum points. The first half was entertaining with both teams trying to test each other’s strength. Makang FC , with taller players, seemed to be at an advantage against their shorter opposition attackers. Makang FC sealed the victory in the first half through a goal converted from a set piece near the 18 area. Defender Ntokozo Thomo scored from the spot for a 1-0 lead. Tumelo Matjeng increased the lead to 2-0, again converting from a free-kick minutes before the whistle ended hostilities in the first half.

Earlier in the 38th minutes, Midrand FC was forced into a substitution due to an injury from a tackle by Samkeleni Maduna who was shown a red card.

Of his red card booking, Maduna said: “I was frustrated. I had not got enough game time in a long time. Coming into the match, I was not switched on,” Maduna said.

Makang FC coach Michael “Msheke” Madolo said they dominated the first half and “we had changed nothing coming into the second half”.

The second half saw both teams slugging it out toe-to-toe, each trying to create goal scoring opportunities. Makang FC tried to break the Midrand’s defence to no avail as it proved solid.

Midrand FC coach Eric Khoele said the first half was challenging for both teams.

“We need to go back to the drawing board and to fix the defence, especially against tall players. Regardless of the disappointing results, the boys played well, especially in the second half where they controlled the ball and created chances.

“We played well but we were not pushing forward as was expected and they intercepted our balls and played long balls,” said Midrand Rovers captain, Robert Mamabolo.

Makang FC captain, Thomo, said they controlled the first half, and that Rovers’ keeper made a several saves in the second half.

“We are hoping to win the next match and to keep on top of the log as we are under pressure to win the league,” said Thomo.
