Youth league hosts street games at Pat’s Tavern
Ward 10 win street games in Ward 13 over the weekend.
On March 24 young people gathered at Pat’s Tavern in Birch Acres to participate in different sport activities.
ANC youth league zone coordinator in Kempton Park Kudan Ramalibana said the reason for the street sporting activities was to get young people off the street and keep them away from drugs.
“We wanted to bring young people together so that they can have continuous hope in the ANC as a leading government.
“This programme will continue even after elections. We are not doing this because of the looming elections but we understand that young people get bored and end up abusing drugs,” said Ramalibana.
He said they try to get young people from all locations in Tembisa and he added that the games in Birch Acres were very successful.

Ramalibana said the programme will happen every Sunday and encouraged small businesses to join the programme to come and sell food at the games.
“While attending the games we cannot go and buy. We should instead support unemployed young people.
“This was a success because more community members attended.
“We used social media to invite the community to attend the event and we also went door to door to gather support.
“We made sure that the young people from local wards are the ones that will be participating and are therefore left with hope,” said Ramalibana.
He said the next games will be hosted in Phomolong Section where they will be forming part of a top 8 tournament.

“The whole week we will be doing door to door visits in Phomolong Section to make young people aware of the games that will take place in the section,” he said.
Ward 10 coach Jabu Mabhena said they played two games where they faced challenges in the first game where they played against Ward 13 from Phomolong Section.
“We managed to win the game and controlled supporters who were entering the field to celebrate.
“We won 2-1 in that first match and in the second game we won in the penalty shoot-out,” said Mabhena.
He said they won 3-2 against Birch Acres Ward 13 and Mabhena added that the games included netball games and they need more netball players to take part.
He commended the organisers and participants for the good games on the day.
“We want to groom young people and encourage them to take part in street games.
“These days young people are not active and they keep in their houses fiddling with their phones and social media,” said Mabhena.
