Entries for the East Rand Classic cycle race close on Monday
Don’t worry mountain-bikers, there’s something for you too.
Cyclists better gear up because the fast-paced East Rand Classic road race is around the corner. The feature race of 98km (or the option of 48km) on April 28 will start at Airports Companies South Africa, next to OR Tambo International Airport.
The flat route promises to be a sprinting haven for cyclists who have a need for speed.
“The fast guys love this race because they normally stay together until the sprint finish and that’s where the team effort becomes very important,” said rider Ryan Harris, who took second place the past two years.
ASG Events chief executive Erick Oosthuizen agreed that the flat route would give an opportunity to sprinters to show their skills. “The East Rand Classic gives cyclists an opportunity to have a great day out on the bike before the Jozi winter chill really sets in,” he added.
Harris also said the race generally came down to the final dash for the line, with teams playing a vital role.
“You have to make absolutely sure of your positioning going into the final two kilometres or so and it’s all about getting your tactics right with your teammates. It’s important to be near the pointy end of the race, rather than getting caught too far back with too many guys around you,” he advised.
Those with a knack for mountain-biking need not fear, the 25km or 50km events on April 27 promise to get your adrenaline pumping.
Cyclists have no time to waste, as entries to these events close on April 15. Visit www.eastrandclassic.co.za to enter.
