Youngsters tee off at Avion Park Golf Club

The u-13 and u-15 challenge tournament, a nine-hole-course initiative by the Ekurhuleni Golf Union’s junior golf division, hopes to promote the sport to players younger than 19.

A golf tournament for youngsters at Avion Park Golf Club on April 14 proved that Kempton Park may have a future Annika Sörenstam or Jack Nicklaus in its midst.The u-13 and u-15 challenge tournament, a nine-hole-course initiative by Ekurhuleni Golf Union’s (EGU) junior golf division, hopes to promote the sport to players younger than 19.

Paola Sakota was the one to watch in the girls division and walked away the winner with her score of 42. Tyra Skinner was runner-up with 29.

In the boys section, Filip Sakota’s score of 76 landed him the first prize in the u-15A division, with Hunter Walker hot on his tail with 77.

Tyron Nell was the best in the B division with 83. Thabo Rahokana was the winner of the C division with a score of 42, and Ian van Rhyn had the best net in the u-15A and B division with 74.

The u-13 section saw Walter Green take first prize in the A division with a score of 79. The runner-up was Mathias Frey with a score of 84.

The B division’s gross winner was Stephen Vermaak and Josh Plaatjies had the best net of both the A and B divisions with a score of 78.

Sheldon Theron won the stableford section in the C division with 27.

According to EGU junior golf coordinator Marlene Haig, a highlight of the tournament was welcoming development players from Daveyton, Kempton Park and Tembisa.

“The tournament also gave us the opportunity of awarding the u-13 and u-15 quadrangular tournament players their silver medals, which they won after competing with Central Gauteng, North West Province and Mpumalanga,” said Haig.
