Butler hopes to win East Rand Classic again, despite rocky cycling season

Defending women’s champion Kim le Court also hopes to add another win to her string of titles.

The East Rand Classic road race is in less than a week, and defending champion Reynard Butler (31) hopes to use the 98km-event as a kick-start to his somewhat disrupted cycling season.

“It’s been a bit of up and down because I crashed out of a race earlier this year,” the Protouch cyclist said.

Due to his injuries, Butler wasn’t in tip-top shape for the Tour of Good Hope or the Cape Town Cycle Tour. To top it all off, he had to withdraw from a race in Morocco because he fell ill.

Despite his rocky start, Butler says he and his team are aiming for the top spot at the East Rand Classic.

“It’s always good to get a win under the belt because that boosts your confidence, and with the guys in good form we are positive about a good outcome,” Butler said.

He won’t be the only one gunning for a win, as defending women’s champion Kim le Court hopes to add another win to her string of titles, including the Cape Town Cycle Tour runner-up.

The Demacon MaxWax racer has not finished off the podium this season.

“It has been a pretty good start and I definitely want to continue my stretch of getting onto the podium,” she said.

The East Rand Classic, held at Airports Company South Africa, will offer a 98 km or 48km road option on April 28, while the 50km and 25km mountain-bike events will take place on April 27.
