The Makhang Easter Games were held at Ivory Park Kopanong Sports Grounds and Maseven Grounds from April 19-22.
This was the second annual hosting of the games by Makhang Supers FC, where Liverpool was crowned the 2019 champions. The games began with a match Mighty Stars FC and Midrand Rovers FC.
Mighty Stars were victorious, winning 3-2. Midrand Rovers, however, fought throughout the match. Raymond Nell, coach of Midrand Rovers, said it was a hectic game, but they missed the chance’s they had.
Alpheus Lebeko, Mighty Stars coach, said: “It was tough. It was different from league matches because in tournament football, if you make one mistake and you are knocked out of the tournament.”
The second match was between Rogue Nation FC and Vintage Palace FC, ending in 5-1 in favour of Roque Nation.
In all, seven teams battled it all out from group stages to the finals. The semi-finals saw Rogue Nations and Liverpool battle it out, as well as Mighty Stars and Makhang Supers. Both Makhang Supers and Liverpool emerged victorious with 1-0 each.
The finals were between the long-time Midrand Local Football Association League rivals, Makhang Supers and Liverpool.
Makhang Supers hoped to defend their title. Both teams faught to the last minute with Liverpool finally getting a goal, which gave them bragging rights as tournament champions.
Makang Supers coach Michael ‘Msheke’ Madolo said it was a very successful tournament compared to the previous one.
“As a team, we have to accept loss and build on it going forward,” said Madolo.
