Kempton Park boxer wins gold at SA championships

Khanyisa was in devastating form and was also awarded the trophy for the best boxer of the championships.

Katlego Khanyisa of Kempton Park Boxing Club won the South African welterweight (69kg) title for the second year in a row when he claimed the gold medal at the South African Elite Boxing Championships in Kimberly earlier this month.

Khanyisa was in devastating form and was also awarded the trophy for the best boxer of the championships, an award boxers from Kempton Park Boxing Club have received on several occasions over the past few years.

In his first fight he came up against M Ntangandzene from Limpopo, an opponent that knocked him out in the first round at the national trials in November 2018. After a cagey first round, Khanyisa dominated the next two rounds and won an easy points decision.

In his next fight he boxed against M Xhayipmi from Mpumalanga. Xhayimpi is a very strong boxer but he was no match for the Kempton Park boxer and Khanyisa again won an easy points decision.

In the semi-finals he came up against S Ngema from KwaZulu-Natal. Ngema is currently in the national team and was the favourite to win the fight. With a display of brilliant boxing, Khanyisa showed his class and won by a wide points decision on all five judge’s score cards.

“This was the second time Khanyisa had beaten Ngema in the past 10 months and hopefully the national selectors will now include him into the national team,” said his coach Peter Armstrong of Kempton Park Boxing Club.

In the finals he boxed against D Fezilifa from the Eastern Cape. Once again Kkanyisa totally dominated the fight and won on a second round knock-out, making him the SA Champion for 2019.

At a tournament at Randfontein Boxing Club over the weekend twins Conner and Danny In T Veld (8), showed why they are future boxing champions when they both won their fights.

Twins Conner and Danny In T Veld (8), showed why they are future boxing champions when they both won their fights at a tournament at Randfontein Boxing Club. Their proud coach, Peter Armstrong, believes they have a bright future in the ring ahead of them.

Conner, having his first fight was matched against CJ Potgieter from Krugersdorp West Boxing Club. Potgieter tried hard but was no match for the boxer from Kempton Park. Conner won the fight when the referee stopped the contest in the first round, saving the boxer from Krugersdorp any further punishment.

Danny, having his second fight, was matched against S Sposato from Iron Fist Boxing Club. Showing his excellent boxing skills and superior fitness level, Danny won the fight by a wide margin on all three judge’s score cards.

These two boxers have a big future in the boxing ring and should one day reach the top podium of the sport, said Armstrong.
