KPFC ends fifth in ILFA Super League

The team is a work in progress and much is expected next season.

With a 4-3 win over Olympia this weekend, Kempton Park Football Club’s (KPFC) ILFA Super League team ended fifth in the 2019 league.

This would no doubt have been disappointing for coach John Mann after such a promising start to the season where the team spent numerous weeks on top or second on the table.

However, the team is a work in progress and much is expected next season.

Kempton, who only had eight first team players available for Olympia, were forced to pad out the side with second teamers. Kempton were completely in control, but were unable to increase their lead despite numerous chances being created.

Kempton’s heads never went down and after a couple of spectacular Olympia saves and a few more Kempton Park misses, Mann must have thought it wasn’t his day.

With a minute left, Kempton were awarded a penalty. Stand-in striker Ociano Pretorius made no mistake and recorded his first hat-trick for the club.

The Kempton Park reserves were under strength and unable to compete with a limited but physical Olympia team, losing 3-0.

This young Kempton team will have to work much harder next season if they hope to challenge for the title.

The Kempton third team ended their season in a creditable fifth place in the Easterns Division 1 league after last season’s promotion, but went down by 2-0 against World Net in the final match.

Easterns Division 3 champions Kempton Park KOBs played twice in a week, hoping to reach 100 goals for the season.

They got off to a great start with a 7-2 victory away at Bonaero Park. A midweek match away at Springs halted the goal rush, but a 2-1 win was secured after the players drew their positions out of a hat for the game.

With so many individuals playing out of position, it was little wonder the margin was so narrow against the bottom-placed club.

Kempton began their second season in Castle SAB League with a hard-fought 2-1 win at home over new boys Molefe.

After taking an early lead through Sthembiso Masuku, Molefe levelled things late in the first half.

Kempton will play at home against Jacoba on Friday, who will be staunch opposition after their 5-1 thrashing of Olympia in their first game.

Kempton competed in the first round of the Nedbank Cup last Saturday, but were beaten 6-5 on penalties after drawing 1-1 with Vos Milan at Bedfordview.

Despite the defeat, coach Eddie Dista is upbeat about the potential of this young team and is confident of a good season ahead.
