Kempton defeated by Cambridge at the start of the season

Kempton Park Football Club’s SAB Castle League side started the 2022/2023 season on a sour note.

This follows their 5-1 defeat on Saturday against Cambridge United Football Club.

For the local team, it was the first game of the season which was also an away game played at the Mackenzieville Grounds in Nigel.

“In a game of two halves, things didn’t go as expected as many wasted chances in the first half came back to bite us in the end,” said Eddie Dista, the local team’s head coach.

Kempton’s side got the heat in the second half of the game as the score was sitting at 0-0 at the end of the first half.

“We were really good in the first half. Plenty of chances created lots of hard work, especially from the new players.

Having been a new team, I think the new players stood out in what I thought was a real good game in the first half, particularly Atang and Mfanafuthi were good.

“In the second half and due to other reasons and in my view ‘lack of experience’ caused costly mistakes that are unacceptable at this level and from what was a very tight game.

“It then became a very open and scrappy game which did not suit us. Having said that and as a coach, I acknowledge we have work to do and will bounce back.

“Congratulations to Cambridge on a job well done on us.

“We take nothing away from the opponents, they are a very experienced team.

“This was not a nice way to open the fixture and not how we hoped and planned to start the league, but we will be bouncing back strong.

“We are going back to the drawing board to amend and adjust to ensure that we bounce back much stronger,” said Dista.

The local side’s second match is a home game where they will face Ambassadors Football Club at Kempton Park Football Club on the corner of Green Avenue and Plane Road. The game is on Friday at 19:30.
