AJ and Stefan make SA teams

The two talented young elite karate athletes have set their goal to reach the ultimate position on the South African All Styles ranking list.

Siblings AJ (15) and Stefan (13) van der Merwe recently medalled at the Karate South Africa (KSA) All Styles South African League Championships.

The event took place in the Lavender Hill Sports Arena in Cape Town.

AJ won a gold medal for unison kata and a bronze medal for kumite, while Stefan raked in a gold medal for unison kata, a silver medal for kumite and a bronze medal for individual kata.

Stefan was also selected for the South African Protea team to represent South Africa in all three divisions at the KSA UFAK Region South International All Styles Karate Championships, which is scheduled to take place in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, at the end of May.

Stefan won a gold medal for unison kata, a silver medal for kumite and a bronze medal for individual kata.

Both boys were also selected to represent South Africa at the IKGA 36th European International Championships that will taking place in Italy in July.

The two talented young elite karate athletes have set their goal to reach the ultimate position on the South African All Styles ranking list.

They are both ranked among the top five in South Africa for their respective divisions.

They now have the opportunity to realise their dreams to represent their country as part of the national team and to compete internationally.

The boys’ family have appealed to the community to assist wherever possible to make the young karateka’s dream come true.
