Local teen overcomes injury to earn spot at international football event
Grade 10 learner Nathan Bredenkamp from SPARK High School Midrand has been selected to represent South Africa at the 2025 Coventry Scouting Showcase in the UK. After overcoming a serious injury, Nathan is now seeking community support to fund his dream trip and take the next step in his football career.
Van Riebeeck Park resident Nathan Bredenkamp was selected to participate in the Coventry Scouting Showcase 2025 in the UK from July 2 to 14.
“I feel honoured and excited to be selected for the showcase. It’s a great opportunity to demonstrate my abilities in front of top scouts and coaches,” said Nathan.
“I’m grateful for the chance to represent myself and my team on such a platform. I’ve worked hard to get here and look forward to making the most of this experience.”
Nathan, a Grade 10 learner at SPARK High School Midrand, was selected after impressing scouts during the trials hosted by ZSports Global.

“The trials were highly competitive, with talented players from various areas all vying for a spot,” he explained.
“I gave it everything I had, mentally and physically, and thankfully, my performance stood out.”

Nathan said being chosen through a professional organisation like ZSports Global validated his hard work, discipline and commitment to football.
“This opportunity is a big step forward, and I’m proud to represent my journey on such a respected platform,” he added.
Nathan is excited about training with players from diverse backgrounds, learning from new coaching styles and testing his skills in a high-performance environment.
“Every match and training session is a chance to grow, improve and leave a strong impression,” he said.

Juggling academics and football hasn’t been easy, but Nathan says it helped him build discipline and better time management skills.
“I’ve had to plan my days carefully to stay on top of homework and assignments while still giving my best effort on the pitch,” he said.
“What I love most about football is the passion, energy and how the game brings people together. Nothing else matters when I’m on the pitch. It’s where I feel most alive and confident.”
He said the game has taught him key life lessons: discipline, teamwork, and handling pressure in victory and defeat.
In 2024, Nathan suffered an injury that sidelined him for six months, forcing him to miss an entire league season.
“It was a tough period. I was making great progress before the injury, and having to sit out was frustrating,” he said.
Still, he remained mentally focused and committed to his recovery.

“I diligently followed my rehab plan, stayed disciplined with my fitness and made sure I didn’t rush the process. That time off gave me a new perspective and a deeper appreciation for the game.”
Now fully recovered, Nathan is ready to make 2025 his breakthrough year.
“This is the year to level up and put everything I’ve learnt into action.”
Nathan hopes to one day earn a place in a professional football academy or secure a scholarship that allows him to continue his education and sporting career.
“This showcase is a stepping stone, and every bit of support plays a direct role in helping me chase that dream,” he said.
To make this dream a reality, the Bredenkamp family seeks financial support to help cover the cost of the trip, an estimated R44 000.
His mother, Kedibone Bredenkamp, said they would sell raffle tickets to help raise funds and welcomed any support from the community.
“Whether it’s monetary donations, sponsorships, sports equipment or simply sharing Nathan’s story on social media, every little bit helps,” she said.
“As a mother, I can’t say how proud and emotional I feel. Seeing him back on the field after everything he’s been through is a blessing.
“Watching his dedication and strength during recovery, and now being selected for this opportunity, fills my heart with joy.”
“This trip means more than just football. It’s a sign his dream is still alive, and he’s stronger than ever,” she added.
Anyone wanting to support Nathan can contact Kedibone on pebane.k@gmail.com or 073 959 5202.
“I’m happy to provide more information about the trip, how the donations will be used and answer any questions,” she said.
