Kempton Park welcomes players for Bowls South Africa Women’s Open 2025

Ekurhuleni hosts 2025 Bowls South Africa Women’s Open and Kempton Park are honored with hosting two days of the tournament.

Kempton Park Bowling Club recently welcomed players from across South Africa for the 2025 Bowls South Africa Women’s Open, one of the most esteemed events on the national lawn bowls calendar.

Players arrived with energy and determination, ready to represent their respective clubs in a series of competitive matches at eight venues in Ekurhuleni.

The tournament featured pairs, fours, and singles categories, with both open and veteran divisions showcasing South Africa’s top female talent.

Kempton Park hosted the pairs category on May 3 and 4. Each team played six games over two days.

On May 5, the spotlight turned to open and veteran singles, with three games played. The fours division followed on May 5 and 6, with players contesting six games per day.

Leigh Austin, a member of the Ekurhuleni organising committee and Kempton Park Bowling Club, expressed her pride in hosting part of this national event locally.

“The Bowls South Africa Women’s Open is one of the most prestigious events hosted across the country each year. This year, Ekurhuleni Bowls had the honour of hosting it, with Kempton Park proudly hosting two days of play,” said Austin.

The 2025 tournament also welcomed international competitors, with bowlers from Botswana joining their South African counterparts in the action, adding an international flair to the already high level of competition.

Over the five days, Kempton Park Bowling Club hosted several Protea bowlers. In a heartwarming highlight, the club also welcomed two visually impaired bowlers, who competed in the singles division with admirable skill and spirit.

“Bowls is a sport for men and women of all ages and abilities, and it was a privilege to witness such inclusivity and sportsmanship,” Austin added.

Despite not securing a win, Kempton Park club member Lynda Gerber said the experience was memorable and enjoyable.

“The tournament has been enjoyable from the beginning. Unfortunately, we lost all our games, we played five in total, three yesterday and two today. But the opponents were excellent, and although things didn’t go our way, it was fun,” said Gerber.
