Birchleigh teen fulfils dream with music exchange trip to Norway

Birchleigh Field Band member Nozipho Masimula has achieved her dream at just 17, travelling to Norway to represent her community in the Chords of Community Exchange programme.

At 17, Birchleigh Field Band member Nozipho Masimula realised a long-held dream when she travelled to Norway from November 15 to 22 to take part in the Chords of Community Exchange.

Masimula, a Grade 11 learner at Hoërskool Birchleigh, is part of the field band as a pit percussionist (marimba).

She said joining the band in 2022 has been a life-changing experience.

“I was drawn to the field band because of its unique blend of music and community service.

“The organisation’s mission to promote social change through music resonated deeply with me. The band’s energetic performances and camaraderie among its members also impressed me,” she said.

Masimula explained that being part of the band has given her purpose, strengthened her musical abilities, and helped her make lifelong friends. It has also taught her valuable life skills in teamwork, discipline, and communication.

“When I joined, I faced challenges adapting to the band’s rigorous practice schedule and performing in front of crowds.

“But my journey has been incredible, performing at events, and attending workshops. Bonding with fellow members has helped me grow musically and personally,” she shared.

Travelling to Norway marked Masimula’s first time abroad and her first flight.

She looked forward to experiencing Norwegian music, culture, and meeting new people while representing her community.

“I’m thrilled to be selected to visit Norway. It’s a dream come true, and I’m excited to experience a new culture, perform at international events, and learn from instructors abroad,” she said.

“Some of my best moments include performing at local events, participating in workshops, and overcoming my stage fright during the national championship.”

She thanked the band and everyone who supported her journey.

“Your guidance, encouragement, and trust have meant the world. I’m honoured to be part of this community,” Masimula added.
