Rising SA athlete Michael Bekker makes international mark in Namibia

Bekker’s first appearance in green and gold saw him dominate the 3 000m and secure silver in the 1 500m at the AUSC Region V Games.

Middle-distance sensation Michael Bekker says nothing topped the thrill of putting on the green and gold in July and backing it up with a two-medal haul for SA at the AUSC Region V Games in Namibia.

In his maiden competition in SA colours, Bekker powered to a gold medal in the 3 000m in a dominant new lifetime best 08:36.96, which bettered his previous best of 08:38.76 by 1.82 seconds. He then grabbed a silver in the 1 500m in 03:57.

“When I look back on 2025, my favourite moment has to be running at the Region V Games in Namibia.

It was my first international race, and standing on that track knowing I was representing more than just myself was an unreal feeling.

“The atmosphere, pressure and excitement pushed me to another level. That experience showed that I’m capable of competing beyond local borders and it’s something I’ll always remember,” Bekker said.

The performances at the Vineta Stadium in Swakopmund followed a silver medal in the 3 000m and bronze in the 1 500m at the ASA Age-Group Track and Field Championships in Cape Town, and a gold in the 1 500m and a silver in the 3 000m at the CGA champs at the UJ Athletics Stadium in March.

These achievements earned the Hoërskool Kempton Park learner, coached by Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) juniors coach Michael van Aswegen, a nomination for most promising junior male athlete of the year at the CGA Awards on December 7 at Melrose Arch.

“I appreciate the recognition. This year was challenging but also incredibly rewarding. So being acknowledged like this is something I’m grateful for,” he said.

The Central Gauteng athlete didn’t only display his talent on the track. He was also prolific during the cross-country season, where he represented the CGA at the ASA champs in Middelburg in September.

He also produced a breathtaking performance at the Carnival City Parkrun on May 24, clocking 14:51 for first place, which earned plaudits from some members of the Boksburg Athletic Club.

Looking ahead, Bekker said we should “expect a more focused and disciplined version of me”.

“I want to take everything I learnt from this season, every race, setback and breakthrough, and use it to become stronger and more consistent. My goal is to keep improving, push my limits and perform even better on bigger stages.”

The youngster thanked Van Aswegen for his support, saying, “When it comes to coach Mike, I don’t think a simple ‘thank you’ is enough.

“He doesn’t just train me physically. He guides me mentally, teaches me how to carry myself and helps me grow as an athlete and a person. I’m grateful for everything he’s done for me. I wouldn’t be the athlete I am today without him.”
