Birch Acres sports club sees strong growth in participation

Participation in tennis and athletics continues to rise as Light Work Projects builds stronger community sport in Birch Acres.

Lubuto Chitibwi, founder of Light Work Projects, said the Light Work Birch Acres Sports Club has continued to grow steadily over the past three years, with 2025 marking significant progress in increasing participation in tennis, athletics and community sport.

With support from the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture and the Gauteng Ekurhuleni Tennis Association (GETA), the club expanded competitive opportunities and strengthened player development during the year.

Among the achievements recorded in 2025 were an increase in tournament participation from eight players in 2024 to 15 players, the training of two qualified tennis coaches to lead player development, and increased participation in the regional league under GETA.

Chitibwi said the club’s athletics division also made notable strides, with two Comrades Marathon runners and three marathon participants representing the club.

Community open days further played a key role in introducing new members to sport.
Infrastructure remains the club’s biggest challenge, he said.

“The goal of Light Work Projects is to collaborate to have facilities upgraded and to include additional sporting codes. We believe this can greatly benefit the surrounding community,” Chitibwi said.

Looking ahead to 2026, the club is calling on young athletes to join its programmes and take part in upcoming events hosted by the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture and GETA. New members will be able to enrol from January when the club officially reopens for the new season.

“We look forward to continuing our work with sporting bodies to raise the level of play, increase tournament participation and support community development through sport,” Chitibwi said.
