Birchleigh started strong in the opening minutes, dominating early play, but Orion soon found their rhythm and began scoring consistently.

Laerskool Orion player Gabriella van den Berg admitted she initially feared defeat but was pleased with the outcome.

“I thought we were going to lose because our opponents were playing very well, but we ended up winning. The experience was really fun, and I think my team and I did our best.

“The only thing I would want to improve is our defence. Should we face Birchleigh again, I hope we win, but with better defence and faster play,” van den Berg said.

Once Orion settled into the game, they began to dominate Birchleigh. The visitors led 10-7 at halftime, having overturned Birchleigh’s early advantage.

In the second half, Orion continued to extend their lead, scoring eight more goals while Birchleigh managed just four.

The hosts struggled to regain confidence, despite coaching encouragement from supporters, and ultimately fell short. Orion finished with an 18-11 victory.

Birchleigh captain and centre, Omphile Molala, reflected on her team’s performance and the lessons learned.

“I expected my team to be confident and win. The experience was nice, but we could have done better. If I could change anything, it would be our defence.

“We need to motivate each other, stay confident and positive. I hope that if we face Orion again, we can win and play with more confidence,” Molala said.
