Ekasi athletics competition for schools a success
Local primary schools, as well as ones in Pretoria attended the athletics competition.
St Athanasius Christian School hosted the Ekasi Athletics Competition with various schools taking part in the competition at Mehlareng Stadium, Thembisa, on March 6.
Local primary schools, as well as ones in Pretoria attended the athletics competition.
Ekukhanyiselweni Marvellous Christian School obtained an overall top three position, Asamaths Thembisa obtained position two and Asamaths Pretoria obtained position one.
St Athanasius Christian School sports coordinator Qaphelani Moyo said the event was meant to give children a sense of purpose and to discourage them from using drugs and to aimlessly roam the streets.
“We want to motivate them to be active in sports, education and mental fitness. This is our third event. We had our first last year in Phomolong, Thembisa, and our second one in Soshanguve at Giant Stadium.
“The main aim of this event is to keep their talent alive and active, we have other sporting codes that we do throughout the year. We have different sporting codes per term, in second term we do ball games and third term we do in-house games.
“The learners can make a living through the sports activities one day. Winners will receive a certificate and medals, the schools are also awarded per their performance where there would be number one to number three as overall winners,” said Moyo.
Asamath’s Learning Academy teacher Keitumetse Madzipa said they had to put extra energy to become overall winners of the competition and it is all thanks to the learners hard work on the field.
“As parents of these learners, we are happy to witness a platform given to the learners to showcase their talent and grow their potential. We believe some of these learners will one day become the Caster Semenyas of this world and others may deflect to long jump and other sporting codes with this foundation deeply rooted in their genes.
“The continuity of sports in our schools is very important for the mental fitness and physical well-being and also for them to meet, greet and mingle with other learners outside their school boarders, especially in competitions like this one,” said Madzipa.
