[BREAKING] Hawks arrest local Sassa official

The woman was arrested on grounds of theft, corruption and fraud.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) arrested a local Sassa official this morning during a national sting operation.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), situated in Von Brandis Street, official was arrested along with 17 other people in various parts of the country this morning. The Hawks arrested the people on grounds of corruption, fraud and theft, Gauteng Hawks spokesperson, Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu, said.

The Hawks, after arresting her at the Sassa office in the CBD, also ransacked her house in Munsieville where they searched for any proof of illegality that could further strengthen the claims against her.

The woman will appear in court soon after which her identity will be revealed.

In September 2014, the News reported that scores of residents from Krugersdorp West, Appelpark and Burgershoop who received Sassa grants were furious after hundreds of rands were withdrawn from their accounts.

The residents received sms notices claiming they will be given food parcels if the Sassa card holder provides them with the last five digits on their cards as well as their identification numbers.

It is not clear if these two incidents are related.
