This week’s Golden Oldie in the Cars of Krugersdorp series is a 1979 Volkswagen Beetle, belonging to Ron Jaikarun.
Ron bought this car 10 years ago, and it is still in its original condition, although the wheels are not the factory-fitted originals.

The car is a full Brazilian import with left-hand drive. The only work that has been done on the car, is rebuilding the motor.
Some interesting facts about the car:
• In April 1934, Adolf Hitler gave the order to Ferdinand Porsche, founder of the Porsche car company, to develop a “people’s car”.
• The Beetle may have been based on the “May Bug”, designed by Josef Ganz.
• From 31 August 1951 to 18 January 1979 the Beetle was also produced in South Africa at the Uitenhage plant.
• The Beetle has a 1585cc engine.
