Kagiso supermarket robbed at gunpoint

Armed robbery suspect who thought he got away was quickly caught by vigilant police.

A 50-year-old man who seemed non-threatening was arrested after he robbed a supermarket in Kagiso of an undisclosed amount of money on Sunday, October 30.

Kagiso Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya explained that the 50-year-old suspect already appeared in the Kagiso Magistrate’s Court on November 1 on charges of armed robbery.

Captain Sibiya said in a statement that the man entered the supermarket at 15:30 on the Sunday holding a cup in his hand. Once inside he pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the security guard who he then ordered to lie down on the floor.

He then screamed at the cashiers to give him cash while still wielding the firearm.

One of the cashiers took out a cash drawer from the till and handed it to the suspect before instructing his colleagues to give the man more cash.

The suspect then ordered everyone to the floor before fleeing the scene on foot. No shots were fired during the robbery. The matter was then reported to the Kagiso police who launched a manhunt for the armed suspect.

“Through crime intelligence driven investigation, the suspect was traced and eventually apprehended.”
