Fun no longer in the sun … but in the snow
Residents of Krugersdorp enjoyed snow for the first time in 10 years according to Saws.
White specs of fluff caused quite a stir across town this morning (Monday, 10 July). Instead of staying indoors to keep warm, residents ventured outside to enjoy this unexpected weather phenomenon that fell across Krugersdorp and surrounds.

Many embraced the occasion, posing for photographs with their loved ones and friends while frolicking in the snow.

Kalynne Heine shared a photo of her and her 11-month-old daughter, Kapri, with the News saying; “The photo was taken in Monument, my daughter was lucky to witness her first-ever snowfall.”

Zanell Pieterse sent in a photo and explained that her daughter, Legne, was so excited and said it was just like Elsa, from the popular animated movie, Frozen.
The South African Weather Service (Saws) confirmed the snowfall and said it was due to an intense upper trough system. They mentioned that the last time Gauteng residents were lucky enough to see the snow was in August 2012.

“A cold front caused a significant drop in temperatures over Gauteng today [Monday]. The maximum temperatures are expected to reach 13°C in the northern areas of Gauteng, with minimum temperatures recorded to have met the criteria for snowy conditions. Snow was observed over areas in the south, such as Soweto, Alberton and Roodepoort. Some of the areas that observed snow include the eastern areas of Gauteng, Heidelberg and parts of Vosloorus. Most of the snow that was observed since morning was over Heidelberg. Light snowfall and sleet are still possible over the Highveld and the escarpment of Mpumalanga today, where expected temperatures for areas such as Dullstroom, Belfast, Roossenekal, Mariepskop, Mount Anderson and Ermelo will not exceed 6°C.”

The public is urged and encouraged to regularly follow weather forecasts on television, radio as well as social media platforms. Updated information in this regard will regularly be available at www.weathersa.co.za as well as via the SA Weather Service Twitter account @SAWeatherService.

A team of colleagues at a local business in town even managed to build their own, very tiny snowman.

Despite all the fun taking place, Saws would like to advise citizens to be safe while enjoying the snow and has provided a few safety tips for residents:
• Don’t drink alcohol or consume caffeinated drinks
• Protect small stock from the cold sheds
• Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from the cold air
• Dress warmly if outdoors
Severe frost is expected overnight as well as on Wednesday morning.
