Residents and visitors heading to Lanseria need to be vigilant when they are in this area as hijackers are on the prowl.
When stopping behind another vehicle, leave half a vehicle length in front of your vehicle to make an emergency escape if necessary.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) recently reported to the Muldersdrift Communication Action Group (MCAG) that the three-way intersection on Malibongwe Drive (R552) at the turnoff to Lanseria Airport has been identified as a hijack hotspot.
Hijackers are especially targeting single females heading towards the airport.
Mike Francisco, security spokesperson for the MCAG says that they would like to raise awareness about this hotspot and offer tips on what to do to avoid a hijack situation.
“We advise all motorists approaching this hotspot to be alert and to report any suspicious individuals to the SAPS immediately.”
He continues that they encourage those heading to the airport to consider asking a friend or family member to drop them off rather than driving alone.
“If this isn’t possible, please remember to stay alert when approaching the hotspot,” says Francisco.
Along with this, the Hijack Prevention Academy advises drivers to:
• Always drive with your windows closed and doors locked.
• When stopping behind another vehicle, leave half a vehicle length in front of your vehicle to make an emergency escape if necessary.
• Drive in the centre lane away from pedestrians where possible.
• Place all valuable items in the locked boot and ensure no handbags or mobile phones are visible through the windows.
• Avoid wearing expensive jewellery or any other valuable items that may be a target for hijackers.
The police will be patrolling in the vicinity of the hotspot on a regular basis to increase visibility
