No abuse at West Rand School

A special visit to the West Rand School as part of the Child Protection Week earlier this month.

Pupils from the West Rand School in Krugersdorp East enjoyed a special visit by the Teddy Bear Clinic along with members of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) of the Krugersdorp SAPS in celebration of Child Protection Week at the beginning of the month.

The West Rand School focuses on children from the age of three years to Grade 7 with physical and learning disabilities.

With the help of Kristen Leslie’s talking flowers, the Teddy Bear Clinic and members of the FCS discussed the different types of abuse with the pupils.

Each time a pupil knew the answer to a question or wanted to ask a question, they had to put their hand in the air after which they received a talking flower to give their answer.

“Abuse is when we hurt each other or when parents hurt their children,” says Kristen.
The team discussed four different types of abuse and half of the hall knew what sexual abuse was.

“Children are not allowed to feel any pain,” explains Kristen.
The FCS handed small gifts to all the participating children as they interacted with Kristen.

Pupils were also taught not to talk to strangers who approach young children in the streets.

The visit was ended off with a inspirational song and dance.

“You do not allow anyone to make you feel less special than you are, because you are special,” Kristen said.
