The body of a former Krugersdorp Cluster Commander, Major General Tirhani Simon Maswanganyi was found in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria on the morning 18 June.
Maswanganyi, who had over 31 years of service in the South African Police Service, was the cluster commander for Johannesburg until his death. He was the cluster commander for Krugersdorp prior to his transfer to Johannesburg.
Lieutenant General Mzwandile Petros, Gauteng Commissioner says that at around 3am a police patrol found his body with his hands tied up in a bushy area.
He says on 17 June they found Maswanganyi’s abandoned Isuzu bakkie next to the road. A police uniform and police identification card were found inside. This prompted a search.
Police are awaiting an autopsy report to identify the cause of death, as there were no gunshots wounds found on the body.
Kate Lorimer, Democratic Alliance Gauteng spokesperson for Community Safety says in a media statement that they would like to extend their sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Maswanganyi.
“By all accounts he was a dedicated policeman who keenly felt the need to make a difference in the fight against crime.”
