El Niño could bring hotter, drier summer to West Rand
Weather conditions could bring severe thunderstorms, heavy downpours, and hail despite reduced seasonal rainfall.
The West Rand could experience prolonged periods of above-average temperatures during the peak summer months, according to weather presenter Juandré Vorster.
Vorster, a self-taught aviation meteorologist, said El Niño is generally associated with warmer and drier conditions across much of South Africa’s summer rainfall region.
Severe thunderstorms remain a threat
According to Vorster, periods of intense surface heating combined with sufficient atmospheric moisture and instability may still produce isolated to scattered thunderstorms.
He said these storms could bring heavy downpours, frequent lightning, strong winds, and hail.
Uneven rainfall expected
“Below-average seasonal rainfall remains a possibility under El Niño conditions. However, rainfall distribution may be uneven, with extended dry periods interrupted by significant thunderstorm activity.”
He explained that residents of the western Gauteng region should prepare for a hotter and potentially drier summer while remaining aware of the risk of isolated severe thunderstorms.
Vorster added that the development and intensity of these storms will depend on prevailing atmospheric conditions rather than El Niño alone.
“I will continue monitoring changing weather patterns and providing updates as the summer season progresses,” he concluded.
