Waste management starts at home
Stop wasting and listen to Maropeng’s Harry the Hominid's advice to help save our planet.
Maropeng’s Harry the Hominid urges the community of Krugersdorp to stop wasting.
“Did you know that each household generates about 1 000kg of waste a year?” asks Harry.
Furthermore it is estimated that South African towns annually generate about 15 million tons of domestic waste.
“We can help by reducing how much of this rubbish goes into landfills,” says Harry who is Maropeng’s spokeshominid.
Households in Krugersdorp have control over the waste they generate and send out.
“If we dump all of our rubbish into municipal dumps (landfill sites) it just sits and rots, and poisons the earth,” warns Harry.
Waste management starts at home, and here are some useful everyday tips from Harry:
• Avoid: Try not to buy items that are not biodegradable such as plastic bottled water. Drink tap water instead.
• Reduce: Buy goods with less packaging.
• Repair: Fix things rather than throwing them away.
• Recycle: Separate waste into recyclable material and keep separate rubbish bins at home.
• Dispose: Only when there is no other way, throw it away.
Following Harry’s tips will not only lead to a better and greener lifestyle but also will help reduce the waste in our town. Remember to follow Harry on twitter – @harrythehominid.
