Celebrating Madiba’s birthday with Art-at-Heart
The Art-at-Heart competition is a Southern African Cashbuild initiative whereby donations are made to some of the region’s most needy schools.

This Mandela Day, the hearts of pupils from Tshepisong, Khaselihle and Silverfields Primary Schools as well as five other local schools overflowed with joy after winning the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition.
On Mandela Day each of the schools received a Cashbuild building material voucher to the value of R12 000 at the Cashbuild Ontdekkers Store Opening Ceremony.
Principal Walter Tlapti from Tshepisong Primary School was excited about his school’s winnings. He said, “We are planning to purchase building material at Cashbuild to make new classroom furniture, such as desks, chairs and tables for the pupils.”
Principal Vusumzi Rajuile from Khaselihle Primary School said, “The number of pupils at the school has grown significantly over the years. We would like to create a bigger playing area for them to socialise and practice netball or soccer.”
Principal Marlen Degenaar from Silverfields Primary School said, “After 35 years the condition of the school has deteriorated. We would like to replace the soccer field nets, the cracked toilets and the broken tiles. We also would like to put up a cover over the netball field seating and replace the rusted cricket nets.”
At the official Cashbuild Ontdekkers store opening ceremony on 18 July, building material vouchers totalling R96 000 were presented to all eight schools. The children entertained everyone with singing, cultural dances and theatrical performances.
The Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition entails pupils from each school submitting their best artwork to Cashbuild. This artwork is displayed at the ceremony, and then remains on display in the Cashbuild store for the next five years. The artwork was judged and three student winners from each of the winning schools were named. Winners received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively.
Since the Art-at-Heart campaign was launched twelve years ago, Cashbuild has helped more than 1 500 schools in Southern Africa with over R16 million worth of building materials. Cashbuild is BEE compliant and every time a store is opened, relocated or refurbished, Cashbuild not only makes donations to local schools, but also creates jobs for community members.
