Fundraiser to give ALS MND disease sufferer a voice

An event to raise funds for a van will be held at the Centenary Hall in Krugersdorp.

A fundraiser is planned to raise money so that a motor neuron disease sufferer from Krugersdorp and his wife could become motivational speakers to encourage other sufferers of the disease and their families in the province.

Deon Nel, who suffers from the same disease as former Springbok captain Joost van der Westhuizen, is paralysed and has been on a ventilator since 2008.

His wife and his pillar of strength, Bernice, wants to raise money to buy a van to visit, support, educate and inform families of motor neuron disease sufferers.

She says that she receives lots of calls from these sufferers’ families, asking her for assistance.

To show people that life on a ventilator is possible, they need a van to transport Deon in his wheelchair, which was donated to him by the Krugersdorp Lions Club from donations from the community.

The fundraiser, which will be held on 21 September at 3.30pm at the Centenary Hall in Krugersdorp will see Candy B Benson performing some of her famous tracks.

Entertainment will be provided also by Pierre Meyer, Tanya Botha, Jamie Lee Smith (a belly dancer) as well as Rhythm In Us dance school students performing some ballroom, latin, hip-hop and freestyle dances.

Tons of prizes are up for grabs to those who buy raffle tickets, and hampers will be auctioned off to raise funds.

The Krugersdorp Game Reserve will be giving away a two-night stay at the reserve, which will include supper and lunch.

The winners will be able to make use of the horse and game trail, and will have free access to the reserve for six months.

There also will be a prize for the best host table.

A ten-seater table costs R1 000 and each guest needs to bring a plate and their own cooler bag with refreshments.

Contact Bernice on 011 954 2327 or 0827508481 to book your table and arrange for payment and tickets.

A special thanks goes to all the businesses and individuals who have sponsored prizes.

If you can not attend the event but would like to make a contribution, donations can be paid into:

CJ Benson, Standard Bank Key West, Branch code 015841, account number 021334552 and please use reference Deon Nel.
