Ponta’s founder celebrates his 90th
Mr Ponta, who is well-known in the community, will be celebrating a very special birthday today.
Local resident JR de Abreu, also known as Mr Ponta, celebrates his 90th birthday on 6 October.
He was born in Madeira in 1923 and came to South Africa more than 60 years ago where he started the family business Ponta do Sol Fruiterers in Krugersdorp West.
He has four children Joe, Maria, Connie and Margaret – all born in Krugersdorp. He also has nine grandchildren and one greatgrandson.
Three of his children and their families live in Australia where he now also lives with his wife Maria (they also celebrate 60 years of marriage in November).
Their oldest daughter Maria still lives in Krugersdorp with her husband, Luis Dias and son Louis, who now runs the family business.
He was affectionately known as Mr Ponta and was famous for his quote “Dis lekker om te lewe in die land van melk en heuning!”
His family and the community wish him a very happy 90th birthday!
