International movie shot in Chancliff
Even though most of the film is being shot in Johannesburg, area scouts found the perfect location in Chancliff to film a scene.
Krugersdorpers were abuzz when local movie director Neil Blomkamp shot a scene of his new movie in a house in Chancliff.
On Friday 13 December the fleet of production vehicles and trucks descended upon Krugersdorp and made themselves at home at the corner of Robert Broom Drive and Clifford Street.
The NEWS visited the site and was star-struck. Like a well-oiled machine production crews were seen bustling around. The NEWS met with the film’s publicist, David Wilson from Streetwise Professor, who briefly explained what the movie is about.
The movie, Chappie, is about a boy who after being kidnapped by two criminals after birth, becomes the adopted son in a strange and dysfunctional family. Chappie is preternaturally gifted, one of a kind, a prodigy. He also happens to be a robot.
The movie stars some of Hollywood’s A-list … Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver, Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) and SA’s Sharlto Copley (as Chappie) and Brandon Auret. Sharlto and Brandon both starred in Blomkamp’s first two internationally acclaimed films, the smash hit District 9 and this year’s Elysium.
Even though most of the film is being shot in Johannesburg, David mentions that area scouts found the perfect location in Chancliff to film a scene.
SA’s controversial rap group, Die Antwoord also stars in the movie.
The movie will be released in 2015.
