The Kagiso police is concerned about the latest two hijacking incidents where police and traffic officials’ uniforms were used to stop unsuspecting members of the community.
Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya says during the first incident on 14 January the complainant was driving on Main Reef Road from Randfontein towards Johannesburg when he saw three suspects dressed in police uniform.
“One of the suspects signaled for the complainant to pull over and suddenly drew a firearm. He ordered the complainant to stay calm and drive to a nearby farm.”
Sibiya says the suspect’s accomplices followed them after which the complainant’s hands were tied and later was forced into the boot of their car.
“The suspects abandoned him in an open field but took his cellphone and ID.”
In a separate incident on 17 January the complainant was travelling on Adcock Street in Chamdor when he was stopped by three suspects dressed in traffic official uniform.
“One of the suspects suddenly attacked and slapped the complainant, where after he was forced into the passenger seat and ordered to lie down.”
The suspect drove the complainant’s white Isuzu bakkie a few kilometres from the scene, stopped and pulled him out.
“The complainant was tied to a tree and abandoned,” says Sibiya.
He urges road users to be more vigilant when driving around the Chamdor area and to not stop for unmarked vehicles.
“Rather drive to a nearby mall or police station when you feel unsafe.”
