A 43-year-old murder suspect was released from police custody after he admitted to killing a man from Makhulugama informal settlement near Luipaardsvlei.
According to Krugersdorp SAPS spokesperson Constable Tshepiso Mashale the court released the suspect on grounds of a statement that he was acting on self-defence at the time of the killing.
“The accused was placed in police custody following a fight outside a shack in the informal settlement,” says Mashale.
“It is alleged that the victim entered the home of the accused in the early hours of Sunday morning 19 January and was armed with a knife,” she says.
“The two men got involved in an altercation and eventually stepped out of the house.”
According to Mashale the accused told police that the victim threatened him with a knife at the time and said that he was going to kill his wife and children.
“As he continued to threaten me, I was scared so I resorted to grabbing a steel pipe that was laying outside to protect myself,” he stated.
According to Mashale he then used the steel pipe to hit the victim over the head, causing serious injuries.
“The victim was rushed to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries, which led to the charge against the suspect.”
