Red Ants fire rubber bullets: four injured
Residents say they have nowhere else to go.
Four people were left injured following a clash with the Red Ants eviction squad in Honingklip on Sunday 2 February.
According eNCA, the injured are among a group of people who have settled on an abandoned farmland in the area and according to reports have been occupying the land illegally since 2009.
Occupants reportedly told journalists that they live on the property out of desperation after their employer disappeared from the scene. They oppose the eviction because they have nowhere to go.
Back in 2009 the former employer and business owner who grew cut flowers on the property filed for liquidation and the group of now unemployed workers claim not to have heard from him since.
The group of 200 people say they have engaged with Mogale City Municipality to relocate them but that the Mayor back-pedalled on an alleged agreement to give them land nearby.
Mogale City Municipality says that the protestors’ actions are equivalent to illegal occupation.
