Krugersdorp named a house break-in and burglary hotspot

Mogale City does not look good after crime survey.

Krugersdorp, Kagiso, Tshepisong and Munsieville have been identified as four of 14 house break-in and burglary hotspots in the Gauteng area, according to a recent report released by Statistics South Africa.

The report, based on the Victims of Crime survey and police statistics, evaluated Mogale City as part of a group of three municipal areas that included the City of Tshwane and the City of Johannesburg.

Hotspots elsewhere in the province include Rietfontein, Roodepoort, Soshanguve, Randburg, Sandton, Dainfern, Midrand, Ebony, Kaalfontein and Akasia.

Gauteng province as a whole proved to have had the highest number house break-ins during the research period, with 194 000. KwaZulu-Natal is next in line with 147 000 and the Western Cape with 93 000.

Among other facts the research found that nationally 49 per cent of victims of house break-ins knew their perpetrator’s name or face.

The question whether to resist during a violent robbery became debatable as research found that 46,5 per cent of victims who did not resist were injured while only 20,7 per cent of victims who resisted suffered the same fate.

People living in urban areas were most likely to fall victim to house break-ins and robberies, with a 6,7 per cent chance. People in semi-urban areas had a 6,6 per cent chance while people in rural areas had a 5,1 per cent chance.

Statistician-General Pali Lehohla who announced the statistics also mentioned that white divorcees between the ages of 25 and 34 who own a business were more likely to be victims of house break-ins.
