West Rand School hosts mass cross country

All pupils regardless of their disability took part in the event.

West Rand School for the disabled recently held their annual mass cross country event – a highlight on the school calendar each year.

According to the school’s Lydia Triegaardt the event is extremely popular with the pupils because it grants them the opportunity to feel part of a team.

“Every pupil in the school can take part in the event, regardless of their disability,” she says.

Lydia says that the days leading up to the event were counted down and pupils attended in large numbers.

A trip around the school serves as the track for the event and on the day able-bodied pupils, pupils in wheelchairs who can push themselves, pupils with motorised wheelchairs, pupils on tricycles and pupils with splints all made their way around the property.

“The atmosphere was amazing and the excitement contagious,” says Lydia.

West Rand School takes great pride in their cross country and other athletes work hard to train them to compete against other schools for pupils with disabilities.

The next event that athletes currently are training for is the upcoming Disabled Inter-House Sport’s Day at Herman Immelman Stadium in Germiston.
