State of the Province address: West Rand on receiving end of expenditure

A main road from Krugersdorp will be e-toll free and will be upgraded by the province.

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane delivered her last State of the Province Address of the current administration during the opening of the Provincial Legislature on Monday 24 February.

In her address, Mokonyane highlighted the successes and challenges of the provincial government in the past five years during which she has served as Premier of Gauteng.

Mokonyane outlined how the provincial government has managed to reduce poverty, create jobs and improve the lives of the people of Gauteng.

The West Rand was on the receiving end of provincial expenditure recently as plans were announced to main-stream media that government would spend R10 billion to widen two national roads in a bid to ease traffic congestion.

The government will spend R5 billion to upgrade the N14 and the N12. The roads would not be tolled, she told The Star.

Mokonyane said the upgrades on the N14 would be from Krugersdorp through to Diepsloot.

The road experiences high traffic volumes during peak hours as motorists avoid using the M1 and N1 highways, often leading to accidents.

Mokonyane said there was a need to upgrade the two national highways, and elaborated on the finer details of the upgrade in her address.

The Star newspaper also reported that another one billion was budgeted to build a new suburb on the West Rand.

In her address she stated that schooling for previously disadvantaged children needed to improve.

On the topic of education in the Krugersdorp area the Premier previously announced that two school hostels in Magaliesburg would be handed over to the Department of Education.
