Don’t fall prey to this ATM scam
Be aware of this sneaky ATM scam when you draw money next time.
South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) warns residents to take note of an ATM scam currently doing the rounds. The scam has been labelled as the ATM keypad scam.
Scammers place a fake keypad over the real keypad of the ATM.
Clients will be able to conduct their transaction without any problems, but the fake keypad transfers their pin and card information to the scammers.
Sabric warns resident to be cautious of which ATMs they use – those at bank branches may be more secure than those at convenience stores.
A good precaution according to Sabric is to feel if the keypad is secure and not placed on the ATM loosely.
Residents are reminded to try to keep their pin secure when entering it at the ATM.
“This extra precaution will guard against prying eyes trying to access your pin,” warns Sabric.
