One way made safer after resident took the highroad
A concerned driver spurs municipality into taking action to make a road safer.
Entering or exiting the parking area at the Anthos Centre (Monument Checkers) in Monument has left various drivers either involved in an accident or experiencing a close call.
One such driver is Krugersdorp resident Lisa Bornman who after the third near-accident decided to take action by calling on Mogale City’s roads department to address the issue.
In an open letter to the department on 3 March Bornman wrote the following:
The service road running alongside Voortrekker Road in front of Anthos Centre is a one way with several parking bays facing towards this one way.
On three occasions I have found myself nose to nose with an oncoming vehicle ignoring the fact that the road is a one way.
On the third occasion we almost had an accident due to the speed of the vehicle committing the offence.
Furious because the public was not adhering to the road signs, I inspected and realised that the ‘No Entry’ signs are missing or have been removed.
I, as an everyday shopper at this complex request an inspector to be sent out to investigate and take action by erecting two No-Entry signs on either side of this one way exit service road to prevent future accidents.
It has been stated to me by centre management and a shop owner that, especially in the mornings, vehicles race down this one way without any consideration for people or the clear markings on the road.
If two No-Entry signs were visible, reprimanding the offender will be so much more justified as the signs will be clearly visible.
Your response is appreciated in advance.
Two days later on 5 March Bornman was called to a meeting with the Roads Department to discuss her concerns.
Later that day a team was assigned to erect the road signs as requested.
Bornman once again wrote to the Roads Department.
I noticed members of your team erecting ‘No Entry’ sign boards at the exit of the one way service road as requested.
Please accept my big thank you for attending to this matter with such speed and efficiency. It is highly appreciated. Would it not be wonderful if the whole country functioned at this level and with the ability to execute, fix and attend to repairs so quickly and with a smile on their faces? I’m sure with time we will get there.
Your response efforts again are received with gratitude.
