New wards handed over to hospital
The revamp not only brought a new, friendly environment, but also was equipped with various essential and modern equipment.
Leratong Hospital’s Neonatal and Maternity Wards officially were handed over.
This after these wards underwent a much-needed revamp. The renovation was done through the generous donations from various private organisations facilitated by the NPO, SA Medical and Education Foundation.
A handover ceremony was held to acknowledge and appreciate the donations that have gone a long way in improving care for the mothers and babies at Leratong Hospital. The event was attended by among others, Gauteng Department of Health’s MEC Hope Papo.
Before the renovation, maternity patients were accommodated in a dilapidated ward. The revamp not only brought a new, friendly environment, but also was equipped with various essential and modern equipment.
The staff is motivated as this has decreased pressure that came with patients waiting a long time for equipment. Pregnancy-related complications can be detected early with the CTG machines and patients can be transported swiftly between service points for further care. The environment also is less prone to infections that are brought by dilapidated walls with peeling vinyls.
The facelift of the Neonatal Ward benefited both mothers and babies. Babies used to share cribs, which made them vulnerable to cross infection. The challenge with space also meant that mothers could not bond with their babies. The upgrade has increased space and this area also was furnished with essential life-saving equipment.
