Chopper van der Bijl from Featherbrooke Estate has undergone surgery after he was shot during a robbery at his home recently.
According to a statement released on behalf of the Featherbrooke Home Owners Association (FHA) three armed assailants entered his residence after gaining access to the Estate by digging underneath the perimeter fence.
Entering the house, one of the armed men fired at the homeowner, wounding him in his abdomen.
It is understood that family members who were in the house at the time of the attack were hit on their heads with firearms and threatened with pangas.
Police was notified about the incident after the suspects had fled the scene and ambulances were dispatched.
The FHA Board and Estate Management is said to have met to discuss the implementation of additional security measures.
Van der Bijl’s daughter Karen Leggatt posted numerous comments on the Featherbrooke Estate Community Facebook page.
“Thanks to everyone for your support and concern. We are all very exhausted. My dad is stable, tired and still quite swollen. Day by day, he is getting stronger,” reads one of her posts.
Leggatt also posted that her father suffered a set-back after his operation.
“My father took a turn for the worse, had a crisis in the afternoon after his operation. He is in a critical and unstable condition.
Please send prayers of strength and hope. May he survive this, as he is a man who never gives up.”
When the news spoke to Leggatt, she mentioned that the estate management did approach her mother about the shooting incident and offered their assistance in the matter.
