One of six business robbery suspects died on the scene after robbing a tuck shop at the Soul City informal settlement.
Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya, a police spokesperson says that the owner of the tuck shop was inside sleeping when he heard someone opening the door, using force.
He woke up and shouted at the suspects to stop.
“They instead threatened the owner to open the door or have his tuck shop burnt down as they have thrown paraffin underneath the door.”
Sibiya says that the owner noticed that one suspect was holding a torch who managed to open the door and headed towards his bedroom, followed by five other suspects.
“As the suspects were searching him, he struck the one holding a torch over the head with a steel object and the suspect fell to the ground.”
The five other suspects then fled the scene on foot.
Sibiya says that it is alleged that airtime vouchers, cartons of cigarettes and cash were stolen during the robbery.
“The wounded suspect later was declared dead on the scene,” says Sibiya.
An inquest docket and a docket for attempted arson were opened at the Kagiso Police Station.
Sibiya says that the other suspects are still at large and they are appealing to the community to phone 011 696 9068 if they have more information about the suspects.
