Monnas unbeated at rugby festival

The festival was well supported with capacity crowds who were able to enjoy a high standard of competitive rugby in good weather.

The boys of Monument High’s Wit Bulle, the first rugby team, once again can call themselves undefeated after a highly successful seventh Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival on Easter Monday.

At the end of the festival three other teams also remained unbeaten – Glenwood, HTS Middelburg and Grey College. Glenwood and Middelburg both won all three of their games played at the festival, whilst perennial powerhouses Grey and Monument won two and drew the game against each other.

The festival was well supported with capacity crowds who were able to enjoy a high standard of competitive rugby in good weather. It was a successful event for organisers and sponsors Standard Bank, Illovo Sugar South Africa, Nashua Durban and the Sharks Academy.

Adding to the status of the festival and to the thrill of players, international rugby referees Craig Joubert and Marius Jonker officiated at three games over the weekend. Joubert said it was always a delight to ref schoolboy games and to experience the wealth of talent coming through at this level of the game.

Coach of the Wit Bulle Hans Coetzee says he is extremely proud of his boys.

“We did exceptionally well at this festival and once again proved that Monnas is one of the best rugby schools in the country,” says Hans.

The boys headed off to Kimberley to take part in the Wildeklawer Festival. The junior teams also toured to Kimberley.

Hans mentions that Monnas sits in fifth position on the top 20 school boys rugby chart.

“We are invited to numerous festivals and the Kearsney Festival is at the top of its league and to do as well as we did shows that Monnas has what it takes to get to the top.”

He also mentions that the team’s scrum half Stefan Fitzgerald and team captain, the flank Gavin Delport played great rugby during the festival and that his team’s hard work speaks for itself.

Congratulations to these Monnas boys.
