Police officer gunned down

The police officer was shot several times in his lower body at his house in Kagiso.

General Riah Phiyega, the National Commissioner of the SAPS has expressed outrage and serious concerns after the death of another police officer.

On Friday 27 June at 6am Lieutenant Colonel Knox Chauke, 56, a training coordinator at the Human Resources Division at SAPS Head Office was gunned down in front of his house in Kagiso.

Unknown attackers shot him several times in his lower body as he was closing the gate to his driveway. Nothing was taken from him.

“As the SAPS family, we are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague. We know that his abrupt and untimely passing has caused untold grief to his family members, close friends and colleagues. We remain united with him and we humbly seek solace and peace during this difficult time,” says Phiyega.

“We remain resolute in our endeavours to fight crime and we will conduct round-the-clock investigations into all these incidents and bring those responsible to book. I earnestly appeal to our communities to join us in our efforts to bring an end to this brutality.”

A man, 39, accused of killing Chauke was arrested in Dobsonville in Soweto on Sunday 29 June and has appeared in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court where the case was postponed to a later date. He is in police custody.
