IFP councillor shot and killed

Councillor Patrick Ngubane was shot and killed at the Madala Hostel in Kagiso after an alleged argument with the suspect.

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) is saddened by the death of its public relations councillor Patrick Ngubane, 44, from Kagiso who was killed Saturday evening (19 July).

Solomon Sibiya, police spokesperson at the Kagiso Police Station confirmed the incident and says Ngubane was shot and killed at the Madala Hostel in Kagiso after an alleged argument with the suspect.

“It is alleged that there was an argument between the two and the suspect left. A few minutes later he returned with a firearm.”

An argument ensued again between the deceased and the suspect, which led to the suspect shooting at the deceased.

“The deceased was certified dead on the scene by paramedics. He sustained a gunshot wound to the upper body,” says Sibiya.

“One empty cartridge was found on the scene.”

The IFP national organiser Alco Ngobes says according to witness accounts, Ngubane attempted to calm a crowd that were fighting when he was shot.

“We call on the police to investigate urgently and ensure that justice is served,” says Ngobes.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. We will miss him for his great service to the party as well the people whom he served.”

The Kagiso Police has registered a murder docket and is searching for the armed suspect who is on the run.

“The police appeals to members of the public with information regarding the suspect to come forward. Their information will be treated with strict confidentiality,” says Sibiya.
