Armed crooks raid charity for vulnerable women

Donated items and a scooter were stolen.

Two armed burglars struck at The Cradle of Hope, a local ministry assisting women and children in desperate need, in the early hours of Wednesday morning 6 August.

The two masked men caught on CCTV cameras as they enter the house.

Melodie van Brakel, founder of the community organisation and owner of the house where the burglary took place says two masked men entered the building at approximately 2.58am and among other items stole a scooter, a welding machine and new donated curtains.

The news previously reported on a separate break-in at the house when two other women lost their scooters to burglars.

At the time Van Brakel expressed her concern about safety structures and the lack of funds to improve such structures at the house.

A member of the community responded since and donated a CCTV camera to the organisation.

“Thanks to that donation we could capture the faces of the burglars when they struck this time,” says Van Brakel.

She distributed CCTV snippets of the burglar’s faces in an attempt to track them down.

“In our house full of already traumatised women, children and young girls, this is a horrific experience,” she says.
