Just fix the lights

Lees requests that the municipality use our money received from rates and taxes to repair the street lights in our wards.

It’s the small things that can make a big difference.

This according to DA Public Safety Representative of Ward 28 of Mogale City, Richard Lees.

“I’m referring to the ever increasing crime rate in our country and how small changes can make a big difference.

“I sit in our local Sector 7 (Noordheuwel) CPF meeting every month and I see a community that is continually plagued by crime.

“The statistics given to us by an extremely dedicated team seem to fluctuate month by month but one thing remains the same, crime will not go away.

“Our patrollers go out on patrol every night and respond tirelessly to calls on the radio for help. These guys and girls do this voluntarily without remuneration in spite of increasing expenses to their own pockets. Fuel and vehicle maintenance are not cheap,” says Lees.

What these patrollers have in common is that they are all residents of the wards in which they serve, which means they all pay rates and taxes.

“This brings me to one of the small things that could make a big difference.”

Lees requests that the municipality use our money received from rates and taxes to repair the street lights in our wards.

“This small task would go a long way to help eliminate crime in our dark streets at night. Requests to the relevant department have not had the desired results and many residential blocks in our wards remain in darkness.

“Our patrollers assist the police, Public Safety, private security firms and even the Fire Department and Emergency Services. So why can our municipality not support them by simply doing what we are being paid for? Just fix the street lights. It’s a small price to pay for this huge contribution by our sector volunteers,” concludes Lees.
