Protesters set personal property alight

Farm dwellers left homeless and with no belongings.

Road users and some matriculants on their way to a farewell had to make use of alternative routes after a group of angry protesters threw stones at cars on Sterkfontein Road in Honingklip.

According to information provided by the Community Policing Forum who blocked of the road and redirected traffic, a group of angry farm dwellers took to the streets just before peak traffic on Friday afternoon, 17 October following an alleged eviction.

The news arrived at the scene of the riots to find dwellers setting their personal property alight.

Some say they have no means of moving their property while others added fuelled the fire with chairs, cupboards and clothes in the middle of the road to show their anger toward the municipality.

Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) together with property owners have been caught up in a battle with illegal farm dwellers in the area for a number of years.

In February this year the news reported that farm dwellers clashed with the Red Ants eviction squad in the area leaving four injured.

At the time the group of 200 people said they had engaged with the municipality to relocate them but the Mayor back-pedaled on an alleged agreement to give them land nearby.

The municipality responded saying the protesters’ actions were equivalent to illegal occupation.
