The looting of foreign nationals’ shops in Soweto recently after a 14-year-old had been shot, has spilled over to Kagiso on the West Rand.
A man was wounded after a group of youngsters attacked and allegedly tried to break into the spaza shop of a foreign national in Tshepisong, police said.
Solomon Sibiya, a police spokesperson said it is alleged that they tried to force open the garage door on Wednesday afternoon 21 January while the owner was still inside.
“As soon as they managed to open the roller door, the owner came out with a firearm in his hand. He fired shots at the crowd.”
A group of young men ran in different directions and it later transpired that one of them was wounded in the upper body.
“The foreign national who fired the shots was arrested and later detained at the Kagiso Police Station while the injured was rushed to hospital in a stable condition,” Sibiya said.
Police confiscated the firearm during the arrest.
In a separate incident a man from Swanieville was declared dead after another attempted looting.
Sibiya said an eyewitness, who said he was playing snooker with the deceased, 61, at a tavern, heard a loud noise outside and decided to investigate.
“They went out to investigate and noticed members of the community stoning the shop, with the shop owner allegedly firing shots at the crowd through the window.”
The man sustained a gun shot wound to the chest and was rushed to a local hospital but he died on arrival.
