Krugersdorp’s Correctional staff shine at awards

The award ceremony was held to express appreciation to the officials of the Department of Correctional Services at management areas based in Gauteng.

It was a night of glitz and glamour at the Gauteng Regional Corrections Excellence Awards, held recently at the Ditsong Cultural Museum in Pretoria.

The awards ceremony was a way to express appreciation to the officials of the Department of Correctional Services at management areas based in Gauteng. Krugersdorp stood out above the rest.

When acting National Commissioner Zach Modise addressed head-office staff in June, he outlined what he expected from the staff throughout all departmental regions and management areas.

Krugersdorp Management Area officials took it upon themselves to heed the call by Modise for proper personal conduct, taking pride in one’s work and being proud of the department.

As a result, Krugersdorp Management Area’s officials came out as winners in four categories of the Corrections Excellence Awards.

From the six categories the management area entered, official nominees scooped four awards.

Winners on the night were Slindile Gumede who scooped the award for Good Governance that recognises individuals who are champions of efficiency and effectiveness, preventing and fighting fraud and corruption, and promoting the integrity of the Department of Correctional Services.

Thabo Donald Phalalo walked away as the winner of the Masibambisane Award, which recognises individuals who promote society’s participation in correctional matters such as reintegration of offenders back into society, and preventing re-offending.

The two winners will represent the Gauteng region at the next National Corrections Excellence Awards. The hosting region and date of the ceremony will be announced soon.

Other winners were the two runner-ups; one for the Deputy Minister’s awards Corporate Services which is led by Paul Kgasago, and the other the Best Combined Centre, which is headed by Blessing Madondo.

The night proved to be a realm of the saying that ‘you reap what you sow’. All the officials who participated really lived up to the saying, and walked away as winners among many nominees who play a part in service delivery in the Department of Correctional Services and beating the drum to service excellence.
